Full text of "President's Report: Lebanon Valley College (1990-1991)"

Honoring the Past,
Planning for the Future

A sensitive restoration and
expansion maintained the
architectural integrity of

building on campus.

Anniversaries are more than simply milestones in
the life of a college. Such celebratory occasions
offer opportunities to reflect on the road already
taken as well as the road yet to be traveled. So
it was at Lebanon Valley College as we cele-
brated our 125th birthday.

The long and rich history of the college reveals a pattern of
risk-taking, tenacity, service and faith. In 1866, despite
opposition from within their ranks to the very idea of higher
education, the college founders forged ahead to establish the
kind and quality of institution they knew was needed. It took
vision and courage. This legacy of liberal education, this
cherished commitment to quality, has persisted at Lebanon
Valley College through periods of war, adversity and eco-
nomic uncertainty.

Today, Lebanon Valley College is increasingly recognized
as one of the best small liberal arts colleges in the country.
Designated "highly selective" by the Carnegie Foundation for
the Advancement of Teaching, it ranks 50th among the
nation's 1 ,200 four-year public and private comprehensive
colleges in the number of its graduates who go on to earn the
Ph.D. Lebanon Valley students consistently win Fulbright and
other nationally recognized fellowships far out of proportion
to their numbers. In the sciences, Lebanon Valley ranks among
the 100 most productive colleges and universities in America,
according to a study conducted by the United States Office of
Technology Assessment.

To assure that this legacy of quality continues well into the
next century, the college devoted a major portion of the
1990-91 academic year to deciding where it wants to go and
what it must do to get there. A strategic planning effort was
undertaken in which some 200 trustees, faculty, alumni,
parents, staff, students and friends of the college gave of their
time, talents and ideas. The yearlong process resulted in the
formal adoption by the Board of Trustees of the "Vision for
1996," a set of statements included on the inside back cover
of this report. Some of the elements contained in these
statements are clearly descriptive of the college as it exists
today; others will no doubt require determined effort to
achieve.

While planning for the future, the college made progress
during its 125th anniversary year in other areas:

■ The renaissance of campus facilities continued

■ Faculty and students won honors and recognition

■ New partnerships expanded educational opportunities

■ Cultural programs were increased

■ Gifts and grants reached record levels

Improvements to Campus Facilities

Lynch Memorial Hall was rededicated in September 1990
following completion of a $2.1 million renovation project.
The main floor now features new seminar rooms, classrooms
and computer laboratories and offices for the Departments of

Annual Report 1990-91

Mathematics, Management and Computer Services. On the
lower level, renovations provided new offices for the athletic
staff and renewed support facilities for intercollegiate athletics,
including weight training, wrestling and locker rooms.

Also in September, the college completed a historically
sensitive renovation and expansion of Laughlin Hall, a
building on Main Street dating back to the 1840s. The
building, which variously served the college as a dormitory,
office building and residence, will now provide a home for the
staff of the Development, College Relations and Alumni
Relations offices, which had been housed temporarily in Blair
Music Center. By April work was completed in Blair to create
an additional sound studio with the latest in recording
equipment.

Work on the Administration Building continued in the fall
with refurbishment of the first floor for the Registrar's,
Continuing Education and Business offices. The second and
third floors were prepared for use as a center for the study of
the humanities. As the year ended, renovation of the English
Department offices was nearing completion.

A project to provide new walkways, benches, lighting and
plantings for the academic quadrangle and along White Oak
Street was completed by September, greatly improving the
look and feel of the campus. By spring, Bollinger Plaza and
the area surrounding Laughlin Hall had also begun to be newly
landscaped.

Lebanon Valley College

Fencil Building on White Oak Street was renovated to
accommodate a child care center for college and community
families. Much of the work was done voluntarily by members
of the Lebanon Builders Association, with additional contribu-
tions from several community organizations. Child care
services are to be offered under the auspices of Lutheran Social
Services.

Faculty and Student Achievements

Lebanon Valley faculty members are dedicated teachers and
active scholars who have always been central to the success
of the college. The past year brought new recognition of their
exceptional quality.

Diane Iglesias, chair of the Department of Foreign Lan-
guages, received the Salute to Teachers Award from the
Pennsylvania Academy for the Profession of Teaching. James
Scott, professor of German, received the Sears-Roebuck
Teaching Excellence and Campus Award. Joanne Cole Rosen,
adjunct professor of chemistry, won the Nevelyn J. Knisely
Award for Inspirational Teaching. Scott Eggert, associate
professor of music, received the coveted Lindback Award for
Distinguished Teaching. Gary Grieve-Carlson, assistant pro-
fessor of English, won the John C. Hodges Teaching Award.

Phylis Dryden, assistant professor of English, was selected
to attend a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)
summer seminar, and James Broussard, chair of the History
Department, won an NEH stipend to conduct research. Philip
Billings, associate professor of English, together with artist
Daniel Massad, published a second volume of Porches, a
book of poetry exploring the lives of Annville residents.
Professor Billings was also selected to attend a National
Council of Teachers of English summer institute. Edward
Krebs, assistant professor of economics, was elected to the
Pennsylvania State House of Representatives.

Students of Lebanon Valley College continue to be recog-
nized for outstanding promise and achievement. Junior Sara
O'Sullivan and sophomore Amy Bonser joined Owen Moe,
professor of chemistry, in a project funded by a grant from the
Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation to develop a modular,
instrument-based chemistry course. One student and three
recent graduates— junior Karla Rittle, David Myers '89,
Christian Hamann '88 and Edwaid Wirth '90— were co-
authors of a paper with Professor Moe published in the Journal
of Chemical Education. Rittle also received an award from the
Eastern Analytical Symposium. Senior Joseph Souders and
sophomore Tavio D' Angelis worked on a project with Michael
Day, associate professor of physics, funded by a Cottrell
College Science Grant from the Research Corporation. Billie
Babe, a junior psychology major, was named 1991 Outstand-
ing Adult Student in Higher Education by the Pennsylvania
Association for Adult Continuing Education. Erika Allen and
Jill Hamilton, both senior elementary education majors,
received funding from the Pennsylvania Higher Education
Association Agency to attend the Pennsylvania Science
Teacher Education Program.

Partnerships

The college forged important linkages with nearby institu-
tions to accomplish mutually beneficial ends.

Under an agreement with Franklin & Marshall College in
Lancaster, Lebanon Valley will expand continuing education
opportunities on the Franklin & Marshall campus beginning
in September 1991. Lebanon Valley College will offer
certificate programs, associate's and bachelor's degrees,
teacher certification, and a master's degree in business
administration. The arrangement replaces F & M's for-credit
evening division program, which for some years had been
limited to awarding associate's degrees.

An articulation agreement with the Pennsylvania School of

Annual Report 1990-91

Art & Design in Lancaster will permit that institution's
graduates in interior design, fine arts and communication arts
to complete a four-year degree at Lebanon Valley College.
The college completed the second year of its Education
Partnership with the Lebanon School District. The partnership
is an innovative arrangement designed to increase the number
of Lebanon City students who go on to college. Many of the
students in the program are minorities. In June, Lebanon
Valley was one of 86 colleges and universities across the
nation to be honored by The President's Forum on Teaching
as a Profession for its efforts to broaden opportunities for
minority youth.

Culture on Campus

The college marked the anniversary of its founding by
expanding the number and variety of cultural events scheduled
during the year. From February through June, hardly a week
passed without a conceit, theater production, lecture or
exhibition opening.

The cultural programs generated so much excitement that a

Public Events Committee was established to assure that a wide
range of events will again be available in the coming year.
By late June, the college had agreed to provide a home for the
Authors & Artists series held for the past decade in Palmyra.
This exceptional series, which features world-class lecturers
and performing artists, has been called "one of the best in the
state" by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

The college also made a commitment to the visual arts by
establishing a College Art Committee changed with oversee-
ing, restoring and displaying Lebanon Valley's collection of
some 130 works. The committee has supported a plan to
renovate the former St. Paul's Lutheran Church on White Oak
Street for use as a gallery and small recital hall. Under the
committee's supervision, Kansas artist Doug Osa was commis-
sioned to create a panoramic, 8x9-foot painting titled "The
Lebanon Valley," in celebration of the college's 125th
anniversary. The work, which portrays the valley as seen from
the ridge just north of the campus, now graces the main
entrance to the Administration Building. The committee also
supported the acquisition of a work by Carol Galligan, "The
Fourteen Stations of the Cross," which now hangs in the new
entrance of the Lynch Memorial Building.

Continuing the Planning Initiative

The strategic planning effort described earlier in this report
is serving as the basis for a major self-study launched as part
of the reaccreditation process of the Commission on Higher
Education/Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
The Commission requires all colleges to undertake such a
study every 10 years. A steering committee chaired by Dale
Erskine, associate professor of biology, was appointed to
coordinate and oversee the work of a number of task forces
studying all aspects of the college. The reaccreditation process
will culminate in 1992 with a site visit by a Commission-
appointed team of faculty and administrators from other
colleges and universities.

A Road Less Traveled

Liberal arts colleges are very special places. Their contribu-
tions are legion. Recent evidence suggests that special care
must be taken to assure their continued place in American
higher education.

A report by David W. Breneman, visiting fellow in
economic studies at the Brookings Institution, described liberal
arts colleges as "distinguished by a mission of providing
four-year baccalaureate education ... in a setting that
emphasizes and rewards good teaching above all else. These
colleges tend to enroll small numbers of students; they
emphasize liberal education over professional training. They
are the source of a disproportionate number of graduates who
go on to earn doctorates and to pursue academic careers. Their
'privateness' means that certain values— religious and other-
wise—can inform their mission in ways not possible at state

Lebanon Valley College

institutions; while their small size makes possible a sense of
community among students, faculty and staff that can rarely
be achieved in larger settings." What a wonderful description
of Lebanon Valley College.

Breneman argues that liberal arts colleges must not be
taken for granted. In 1970, 689 of the nation's 3,400 colleges
and universities were classified as liberal arts colleges under
criteria developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Ad-
vancement of Teaching. Today, only 212 institutions continue
to qualify as liberal arts colleges under those same criteria.
The rest didn't disappear— they changed their fundamental
nature. They bowed to the market pressures that followed
more than a decade of declining numbers of high school
graduates. In order to attract students they offered more and
more career-oriented programs, reducing substantially their
commitment to liberal learning.

Even fewer of the 212 remaining liberal arts colleges
managed to hold onto the more stringent criteria required to
maintain a Division I designation under the Carnegie classifi-
cation system. Such status is accorded only to those institutions
like Lebanon Valley College that award more than half of their
degrees in the arts and sciences, and that continue to maintain
high selectivity requirements for admission.

Record Support, Growing Enrollments

Lebanon Valley College has stayed the course, maintained
the integrity of its programs and remained true to its mission.
In so doing the college has prospered, attracting both students
and financial support. Despite a recession, gifts received
during the year reached record levels. The college met both
the Kline Foundation's challenge to the Annual Fund and the
Kresge Foundation's Scientific Initiative Challenge. Further,
despite declining numbers of high school graduates, by year
end it was already evident that total enrollment for 1991-92
would also reach new levels.

Lebanon Valley College is, and always has been, a very
special place. Alumni, students, faculty, staff and trustees
have a right to feel pride in the college's accomplishments and
take pleasure in its growing reputation. To all of you who care
for the college and who continue to support and sustain it
through your gifts, your service and your talents, thank you.

Sincerely, .

We Met the Challenge

8r

Donors are responding to
the college's improved
physical appearance and
to its dynamic academic
program, says Charles W.
Wolfe.

In many ways, 1990-91 was a banner year for the college,
particularly in the generosity of its constituencies.
Total giving reached a record $3.3 million, which
marked a 17.9 percent increase over the previous year's
$2.8 million.

The Annual Fund also achieved a record $785,000 in
unrestricted gifts, exceeding the amount required to meet the
Josiah and Bessie Kline Foundation Challenge for the thiid
year in a row. I am especially pleased to report that every
member of the Board of Trustees contributed to this year's
Annual Fund. Special thanks go to Annual Fund Chairman
Darwin Glick '58 for his fine efforts.

As this is written, we are looking ahead to the new fiscal
year with a new Kline Challenge goal of $867,000. I am
pleased to announce that the trustees and staff, along with
leading volunteers, are determined to reach and surpass that
goal and "make it a million" — $1 million in operating gifts
for the academic program. Pete Strickler '47, building on
Darwin's good work, will strive to reach that million dollar
Annual Fund in 1992.

Lebanon Valley College is achieving new heights, inspired
by the many academic strengths of the faculty and students,
and the "can do" spirit of the trustees, volunteer leaders on
the development committees, and our diligent staff.

The Alumni Association, under the capable leadership of
President Betty Criswell Hungerfoid '54 and many hardwork-
ing alumni volunteers, adopted a new constitution in June,
during Alumni Weekend. The new organization, built upon
an elected Alumni Council and Officers, will begin functioning
early in 1992.

This past year was the first, too, for the Lebanon Valley
Education Partnership's Achievement Challenge Golf Tourna-
ment. The golf outing raises funds to support the college's
partnership with the Lebanon School District. The partnership
is designed to encourage more young people to consider a
college education, and to provide scholarship funds if they
should choose Lebanon Valley. Special thanks go to Tom
Reinhart '58, the tournament chair, and to the renowned Sam
Bowie, the honorary chair and Lebanon native who now stars
for the New Jersey Nets.

Clearly, more and more people who have reason to be
interested in Lebanon Valley are being stimulated by and are
responding to, the college's dynamic academic program, the
improvements in the physical appearance of the campus, and
the scholarly endeavors of faculty and students.

Annual Gifts
Make a Difference

Gifts to the Annual Fund help provide resources
critically needed to fulfill Lebanon Valley's
mission of academic excellence and educational
opportunity.
In 1988 the college accepted a challenge from
the Josiah and Bessie Kline Foundation to raise an incremental
$80,000 in annual gifts over each of the ensuing five years.
The trustees have set the pace and other college friends have
followed their leadership. This challenge has been met in each
of the first three years resulting in $240,000 in matching funds
given to the college by this supportive foundation.

Alumni and other friends, through their annual giving
commitments in the year just ended, enabled Lebanon Valley
to meet successfully the third-year target of the five-year Kline
Challenge.

Since tuition covers only about three-quarters of the cost of
educating our students, income from the Annual Fund is a
most important part of the college's operating support. Annual
Fund gifts help with every aspect of the educational program,
including student financial aid, faculty salaries, both intercol-
legiate and intramural athletics, religious programs, lecture-
ships, and cultural events and campus maintenance, among
many others.

Noteworthy Annual Giving accomplishments during 1990-
91 included:

• a record unrestricted total of $785,297

■ outstanding work by volunteer class agents: Betty
Rutherford Daiber '41, Sarah Stouffer Sandy '46,
Floyd Baturin '51, Gene Geesey '56, Shirley Landis
Dietz '61, Steve Roberts '65, Dave Todoroff '80
and Wendy Carter DeRico '85

■ an impressive 33 percent increase in giving by our
own faculty and staff— a very special vote of
confidence

As I complete my tenure as chairman of Annual Giving I
would indeed be remiss if I didn't mention the good work
done by my division chairs: Charlie Wolfe '44, Trustees; Suzie
Arnold, Friends; Dr. John Norton, Faculty and Staff; Roy
McMindes, Business and Industry; Russell and Cathy Dennis
P'92, Parents; and Jim Haine '91 and Lynn Smith '91, Senior
Gifts.

On behalf of the entire Annual Giving team, thank you to
all the good friends of Lebanon Valley College who have
helped make the 1990-91 year a resounding success.

Lebanon Valley Education Partnership

The Lebanon Valley Education Partnership is a program being
carried out with the Lebanon School District that encourages
young people to consider attending college. The three-part
program familiarizes students with the college environment,
identifies those qualified to pursue a college education, and
provides scholarship funds if they should choose Lebanon
Valley. Last September, friends of the college and representa-
tives from local industries participated in a golf outing at the
Lebanon Country Club, which raised $27,300 for scholarship
assistance.
